Christmas “Traditions”

We get them in the mail all the time. Sometimes it is a reminder to “Save the date,” other times it is a formal invitation to a wedding or a graduation. These invitations are usually to events that are “life-changing.” A couple coming together or a graduation marking the end of one phase of life and the movement to another. Invitations are a signal that something so important is about to happen that you won’t want to miss it. This…

A Season of Encouragement

Sunday, October 27, was a great day at Wightman United Methodist Church. We held two worship services, we had people joining our church, we celebrated a baptism, we held our church’s annual charge conference, we had over 20 people serving or attending Emmaus Walk, an intense spiritual weekend, and we enjoyed kicking off our first week of UpWard Flag Football. Sunday represented the very best of Wightman. Following our church’s charge conference, I walked across the road to see the…

JOY gROUP TALENT SHOW

JOY group members showed this morning that they are never “too old” to show their talent and have “FUN” doing it. Thanks to Tina and Gary Hooker, Therry and Leonard May, and Margie Moore for planning this event. All had a wonderful time of fellowship and the meal was delicious.

Fourth Quarter

With the coming of the Fall season many people turn their attention to . . . . Football! South Carolina is a football-crazy state as evidenced by the passion the fans show for their favorite team. As I watch games on television, I sometimes see players huddling together at the end of the 3rd Quarter and they are all jumping up and down and holding up four fingers. This practice originated in the 1950’s with coach Bear Bryant at Alabama (my…

United Methodists Responding to Disaster

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) brings God’s hope, healing and renewal to people whose lives have been disrupted by war, conflict or natural disaster. UMCOR provides humanitarian relief and disaster response to people in more than 80 countries, including the United States. After flood waters have receded, wounds have been tended, basic needs met, and the world’s attention has faded, The United Methodist Church continues to be present by providing ongoing assistance. UMCOR provides survivors not only temporary relief, but also…

Small House, Big Impact

If you have looked at Wightman’s walking track you have seen a very tiny house. The house represents Tiana’s house, an orphanage in El Salvador that Wightman has been working with for the past three years. Recently, we learned the orphanage could be completed by Christmas, but $15,000 is needed to complete the job. An anonymous donor has offered to match dollar for dollar any funds raised for the house up to $7,500. Wightman’s Administrative Council accepted the challenge to…

Christian Education at Wightman

While our public schools have been in session for a couple of weeks now, with the start of September it seems like we get more focused on education and learning. This is also true at Wightman Church. Every fall and spring, we hold some Christian education experiences to further your understanding of scripture and assist you in your walk with Christ. This fall our Tuesday evening Bible studies will begin on September 10. As in the past, a meal will…
