Going Deep

In the fifth chapter of Luke Jesus tells the disciples to “put out in deep water.” The disciples are tired, they have fished all day and not caught anything. They really don’t want to spend the effort and energy only to come up empty once again. Yet, because Jesus asks them to, they obey and they experience a catch so miraculous it almost sinks their boats. Simon Peter’s response is to fall at the feet of Jesus. He realizes Jesus’…

Advent at Wightman UMC

Currently, we are in the advent season reflecting on and awaiting for the birth of our Lord and Savior – Jesus Christ. There has been much preparation that has taken place in order for Wightman to experience this time of advent, which is all presented before God during our Sunday morning worship services. Each week the members of Wightman UMC have worked together to present their gifts to God.  During the first week, the youth reminded us how blessed we…

Presenting the Gospel Story in a Clear Way

With the coming of December, many people’s thoughts are focused on Christmas. The town of Prosperity has already started decorating, the stores have set out specialty items, parties will be aplenty and “goodwill” towards our brothers and sisters reaches a yearly high. Of course the church is no different. Without Christmas, the coming of God’s Son to earth, our worship of God and our relationship with Him would be quite different. I picked up a book this past week about…

A Season of Thanks

November is the month when our nation takes a day to give thanks for the blessings that we have. We know this is something that we shouldn’t do just one day a year, but should do each and every day because we have so much to be thankful for. I guess there are many reasons why we fail to give thanks, but one of those stems from the false idea that we are not blessed “enough.” What I mean by…

Global Eyeglass Ministry (GEM)

Do you have any old prescription eyeglasses in a drawer? Donate them to GEM who partners with Christian church- es to enhance their global mission trips by providing vision resources. On a mission trip to Honduras our granddaughter was so blessed to hear a man say “Now I can read my Bible” after he was fitted with glasses from GEM. A collection box is on the table in the narthex for glasses you no longer use. (no cases, sunglasses, or contacts…

Momentum

It’s football season and if you watch a football game you will definitely hear the announcers talk about which team has the momentum. “Momentum” is a physics concept, when an object has momentum it continues to move in the same direction and the more momentum and more mass behind the object, the harder it is to stop. Think of a locomotive. Something that large is hard to stop even when it appears to be moving slowly. And when it picks…

Youth Pumpkin Patch is Open!

The youth Pumpkin Patch is open! Come and buy a pumpkin (or two or three) and support our youth. All proceeds from pumpkin sales will go toward their 2019 mission trip to Colorado, so they are very appreciative of your help in making this year’s patch a success! Thank you to everyone who has helped out with the Pumpkin Patch so far! Please see Cassie Rainwater if you would like to sign up for a time to sell pumpkins. Make…

Need Volunteers for 09-23-18

Hello church family,  The evangelism team is needing volunteers to bake chocolate cookies for the upcoming worship service on September 23rd. There can be a variety of the type of cookie you would like to bake but it should include chocolate (for the sermon series about chocolate Sunday’s). You can bake here at the church in the morning or at home the evening before to ensure freshnessJ. However, I do encourage baking at the church for several reasons: fellowship, activity…
